Top 6 skincare mistakes made by men

When it comes to skincare, men often overlook the importance of a proper routine. However, by avoiding common skincare mistakes, you can achieve skin that looks and feels healthy.

Keep reading to find out the most commonly made men’s skincare mistakes so you can avoid them…

1. Not Cleansing Daily

One of key skincare mistakes men make is neglecting daily cleansing. Forgetting to cleanse skin properly can lead to the build up of dirt, oil, and impurities, clogging the pores and causing breakouts. To avoid this, men should incorporate a gentle facial cleanser into their daily routine.

Choose a cleanser suitable for your skin type, and cleanse your face twice a day, morning and night, to maintain a clean and refreshed complexion.

2. Skipping Moisturiser

Another mistake men often make is skipping moisturiser, assuming it's not necessary because they have oily skin and therefore do not need to moisturise.

Moisturising is vital for maintaining proper skin hydration and preventing dryness, flakiness, and premature aging. It’s important to note if you have oily skin, that avoiding moisturiser will make your skin produce more oil to hydrate itself, so regularly moisturising will actually help your skin become less oily.

Choose a lightweight moisturiser formulated for your skin type and apply it after cleansing. Regular moisturisation will keep your skin supple, smooth, and healthy.

3. Forgetting Sun Protection

Many men underestimate the damaging effects of sun exposure on the skin. Forgetting sun protection can result in sunburn, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer.

To avoid this mistake, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day with an SPF of 25 or higher before stepping outdoors - even if it's not sunny and make sure to reapply regularly.

4. Overwashing or Over-Exfoliating

While cleansing is essential, overdoing it can damage your skin. Overwashing or over-exfoliating strips the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and even acne breakouts.

Try not to cleanse more than twice a day and keep exfoliating to a maximum of 3 times a week.

5. Bad Shaving Habits

Improper shaving techniques can cause razor burns, ingrown hairs, and irritation. To avoid these issues:

  1. Prep the skin before shaving by washing with warm water
  2. Use a shaving cream or gel, and ensure your razor is clean and sharp
  3. Shave in the direction of hair growth to minimise irritation
  4. After shaving, apply a soothing aftershave or moisturiser to calm your skin

6. Neglecting Eye Area

The delicate skin around the eyes is prone to signs of aging and fatigue. Neglecting proper eye care can result in dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines which can unnecessarily age your appearance.

Men should include an eye cream or gel specifically designed for the eye area in their skincare routine. Apply a small amount using your ring finger and gently pat it around the eye area to keep the skin hydrated and reduce signs of aging.

What does this mean?

By avoiding these common skincare mistakes, you can help to take better care of your skin and incorporating these simple tips into your skincare routine will help you achieve noticeable improvements in your skin's health and appearance.
